When it comes to pure, unadulterated outdoor comfort and style, nothing says “lap of luxury” like an outdoor day bed. Whether just relaxing on a sunny afternoon, kicking back after a hard day, or entertaining a group of family or friends, a day bed will give your outdoor space a relaxed, inviting aura that will make your guests feel welcome.

And for some people, a comfy outdoor canopy day bed lets them fulfill a “Roman emperor” fantasy of lounging by the pool on thick, luxurious pads and pillows, eating grapes, sipping wine, and generally enjoying the high life.

Seriously, an outdoor canopy day bed is perfect for those looking to turn their backyard space into their personal spa or entertainment venue. Outdoor day beds are available in huge range of styles, designs, and sizes; you can choose from versatile sectionals to clamshell canopy style to simple chaise lounge types. They can also run a gambit of price points, from $300 to $1400. To help you make an informed decision on the type of the day bed that might be right for you, let’s take a look at some things to consider.

Size of Day Bed and Outdoor Space

One of your first and biggest concerns will be the size of the day bed in relation to the size of your outdoor space. Don’t be tempted to over-furnish your outdoor area. If your space is limited, you don’t it to be completely dominated by a day bed. Similarly, you don’t want a bed that works well in your outdoor environment but is too small to accommodate a number of people. While it might be tempting to go big, take a good look at your available space first and go from there.

Frame

Here’s where quality matters. You’ll want a day bed with a solid design that’s sturdy enough to accommodate any number of people of varying sizes and weights (most models can support 240 pounds per person). Since it will be outside pretty much permanently, it also needs to be built to withstand any type of weather environment.

Most of the more popular models are made from a polyethylene weave, aluminum, hardwood, or steel. All have their advantages. Hardwood is a popular option because of its classic looks and load-bearing capabilities. Steel, of course, is the strongest and is often chosen for its durability, ability to support more weight, and rust resistance, an important consideration for an outdoor bed.

The weight of the bed itself is also something to be considered. Can it withstand heavy winds without toppling over? What type of surface will the bed be situated on? Will it stay in one place or will it be moved around? In the case of the latter, go light if you’re looking for something easily movable or that you might even take with you to another location.

Fabric

When it comes to fabrics, polyester is the runway favorite and most commonly used. Durable and affordable, it easily resists wear and tear while being water and mold resistant. It is also common to find outdoor day beds fabric that have been treated with a special coating to protect against UV rays. Some even come with fabrics that are stain resistant.

Colors

While this a personal choice, the color of your day bed should pair nicely with the natural ambiance to your outdoor surroundings. Also, while they may be nice, neutral colors, we recommend avoiding grey or white as they show dirt and stains easily and are hard to keep clean. If you have existing patio furniture, it’s a good idea to match it in color and overall aesthetics.

Canopy?

To canopy or not to canopy? While canopies can be more costly and need extra maintenance, they jack the comfort, versatility, and usage levels up to 11. As well, a canopy lets you enjoy your day bed even on the hottest of days. Look for canopies that are weather resistant, easily retractable, and that reflect as much UV rays as possible. Canopy models are the Rolls Royce of outdoor day beds and if you have the space and budget, they’re worth the investment. Best: they are not significantly more expensive than day beds without a canopy.

Here are some of the better outdoor day beds we found in our recent reviews.
